Journal: First week of class

It’s time for this weeks journal. Normally my journal will appear on Sunday, but I was feeling a little under the weather.

  • Monday

Last Monday was my first day of class and I started with a Media and Communication lecture. I couldn’t really understand anything about it. and when I went to the course officer she asked my why I didn’t just switch to Publishing. I thought why not? I had to email Mary Ann, the head of Publishing, to see if she would allow me to join. But she told me it wouldn’t be a problem and that if I was free I should come on by and sit in on the next lecture. Which was 30 min after I got that email. I did have class, but I wanted to switch anyway so I decided to go to Managing and Creating Intellectual Property. It was a blast! The air and the teachers were completely different compared to M&C.

Another day of class for me and an early one at that. I had to be in class at 9, but it was the first time I had to travel during peak time in London so I was 10 min late. Mary Ann’s lecture was all about helping us in getting jobs or placements and our final project we need to do. Which’ll be nice and handy when I try to get a placement at HarperCollins, or Bloomsbury.

Later that day we had Business and Marketing from a great guy who reminded me of an old teacher of mine. Normally I would find Business pretty boring I’d imagine, but with regards to publishing I didn’t find it boring at all. I loved it. The project we need to do for this class is creating an imprint for Profile books and connecting 3 books we’d like to publish at the imprint. Later on we’ll have to present/pitch this in the Profile books boardroom. Isn’t it the best assignment ever?

  • Wednesday

Wednesday was my day off where I rewatched Outlander. I cannot wait for the new season! I really need to know the date asap. Also did a bit of reading.

  • Thursday

Thursday I had my last class for the week. Which was all about the history of publishing. Fascinating really. I did a bit of it during my English and Education course so I wasn’t completely in the dark here. We’re going to have to study the Arden Shakespeare. I have every work of Shakespeare, but I’d never heard of the Arden version. Apparently it has modern spelling and introductions and commentaries. I quite enjoy Shakespeare so I think I’ll enjoy this. The only full length essay we have to write is for this class. It’s 3000 words, compared to the 1750 and 800 of other classes, I quite like this as well. Gives me a bit of room to breathe.

Did some reading most of the rest of the day.

  • Friday

Today I did loads of cleaning. The house I live in hasn’t been properly cleaned in ages. There is a cleaning lady coming round every month, but her version of cleaning does not match mine. So I did a bit of good cleaning and later that evening I went into the city to meet some classmates of mine, because we were going to Waterstones to see Laure Eve and Peadar O’Guilin. I’ll post the interview up sometime this week. It was very interesting to see what they all thought about or didn’t think about while writing.
